Japanese Onomatapoeic Expressions


ゆったり- calm, spacious and comfortable. The state of spending time leisurely. It is often used in a good sense.

ゆったり(と)V (暮くらす、過ごす、くつろぐ など)




The new house is big and the bath is spacious.

のんびり- the state of being unbusy and carefree and calm.
It is often used in a good sense, such as “relaxed personality”.
When used to evaluate a person, it often has a negative meaning.

1. 今日はビーチでのんびりしよう。

Let’s relax on the beach today.


つるつる - A smooth, slippery surface (all). It is often used to refer to the surface of ice. It is also called “slippery”.





1. ワックスをかけてきれいに磨みがいた床ゆかが、つるつる滑すべる。

The floor that has been waxed and polished neatly is slippery.

がんがん- It expresses a loud sound or a loud voice, or the sound of hitting something that resonates well. It also shows the intensity of power.


1. 夜中に、お酒さけに酔よった人が、店のドアをがんがん叩たたいていた。

In the middle of the night, a drunken man was banging on the store door.


しくしく- Crying in a small voice.

Usually children and women.



Scolded by mother, the child is crying.

わんわん- A person crying out loud.

   イAdj がる(Someone wants to; someone    feels)

~がる is a suffix verb meaning someone wants, or someone feels something. It always takes a third person as a subject.

2. Verb Plain Non Past

   +    といい  (I hope; I wish)

You can use  といいんですが to say that you hope something nice happens. When you are wishing for the good luck of somebody other than you, use                      といいですね.



1.  明日の試験しけんは難むずかしくないといいんですが。

I hope the exam tomorrow is not difficult.


A:  昨日から風邪かぜをひいています。

I have caught a cold since yesterday.

B:  それはいけませんね。早く風邪かぜが治なおるといいですね。

That’s bad. I hope you recover from your cold soon.

3. V てForm    +  ほしい     (I want to~)

When you want somebody to do something, you can describe you wish by using  ~てほしい. or ~ないでほしい .



1.  ここでお酒さけを飲まないでほしいです。

I want you not to drink alcohol here. (I don’t want you to drink alcohol here.)

2.  友達はいつも嘘うそをつきます。


My friend lies all the time. I don’t want her to tell a lie.

3.  結婚式けっこんしきプレゼントにパソコンを買ってほしいです。

I want you to buy me a PC as a wedding present.

I don’t want my friend to talk about the old times because it’s boring.

4.  (疑問詞)ぎもんし + Verb Plain Past      Affirmative +  らいい      ( Should I ~)


疑問詞 + ~たらいい is used in seeking advice. It is used in similar way as  ~ばいい.




A: 銀行ぎんこうのカードATMから出てこないんですが、どうしたらいいですか。

My bankcard has not come out from ATM. What should I do?

B: すぐ銀行に連絡したほうがいいですね。

You should contact the bank immediately.


A:  申し込み書の記入の仕方が分からないんですか。

Don’t you how fill up the application form?

B:  ええ。そうなんです。誰に聞いたらいいでしょうか。

Yes, you are correct. Who should I ask?


A:   松村まつむらさんのお見舞みまいいに行きたいんですが、何を持って行ったらいいでしょうか。

I want to see Ms. Matsumura and give a get-well gift. What should I bring?

B:  お花でも持って行ったらいいんじゃないですか。

Wouldn’t it be nice if you bring flowers?

     (all you need to do is)

~ばいい means things will be alright if one does the action. This is the same meaning of

~たらいい . However, sometimes  ~ばいい indicates only necessary thing should do, so I sounds a bit unkind.



1. 車がない時はタクシーをひろえばいいです。

If you have no car, take a taxi. (and everything will alright)

2.  すみませんが、駅えきにどう行けばいいんでしょうか。

Excuse me. How could I get to the station?

3.  漢字かんじが読めない時は


When you cannot read the kanji, all you have to do is to consult a dictionary. (and you’ll know it)

4.  確たしかに宿題しゅくだいを忘れたのはあなたの責任せきにんだから、謝あやまればいいんです。

Since it was certainly your fault that you forgot your homework, all you have to do is to apologize.
